Former San Francisco Giant and three-time all star, Brian Wilson, has pitched in 15 games now with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 11.1 innings pitched, Wilson has a 0.79 ERA and has allowed 8 hits.

Just a few years back, Wilson was one of the premier closers in the league with a high of 48 saves in 2010. However, during a game in April of 2012, Wilson injured his elbow and underwent Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career. The previous surgery had been during his college days at Louisiana State University.

Due to various reasons, pitchers often come back from Tommy John surgery feeling healthier. Wilson’s future is yet to be determined, but his pitching patterns have changed dramatically this year compared to how he threw as a closer for the Giants.

Below are Wilson’s pitch velocities from the last four years:

2010 (74.2 IP):
Fastball: 95-97 MPH (60% of pitches)     Average speed: 95.1 MPH
Slider: 87-90 MPH (37% of pitches)     Average speed: 88.8 MPH
Cutter: 89-95 MPH (1% of pitches)     Average speed: 91.9 MPH
Changeup: 89-91 MPH (1% of pitches)     Average speed: 89.6 MPH
       2011 (55.0 IP):
Fastball: 93-95 MPH (53% of pitches)      Average speed: 94.1 MPH
Slider: 87-91 MPH (47% of pitches)      Average speed: 89.0 MPH

2012 (2.0 IP):
Fastball: 88-93 MPH (9% of pitches)     Average speed: 90.7 MPH
Slider: 86-91 MPH (82% of pitches)     Average speed: 88.8 MPH
Curveball: 81-83 MPH (9% of pitches)     Average speed: 81.9 MPH
       2013 (11.1 IP):
Fastball: 90-95 MPH (24% of pitches)      Average speed: 92.2 MPH
Slider: 87-90 MPH (47% of pitches)      Average speed: 88.1 MPH
Curveball: 81-83 MPH (1% of pitches)      Average speed: 80.1 MPH

Prior to the 2012 season, Wilson was whipping in his fastball more than half the time with some of the top speeds in the league. For unknown reasons, Wilson’s fastball decreased roughly 3.4 MPH per pitch before his injury occurred. With that being said, he did only throw 56 total pitches, 46 of which were sliders.

Even though Wilson increased the use of his slider just prior to his injury, he has gone back to that approach in 2013. With only 1 ER and 10 strikeouts in 11.1 IP, Wilson has fit in well with the Dodger’s bullpen. He has lost a little on his fastball, but has found other ways to fit in wearing Dodger blue.
